The purpose of Zane’s Run is to spread awareness and raise money to support families with children who have been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, or SMA. SMA is a terminal, genetic disease that leads to the loss of nerves in the spinal cord, which results in the weakening of the muscles associated with these nerves. Those born with SMA have a difficult time acquiring the ability to perform tasks such as walking, sitting, standing, eating, and swallowing. Although SMA causes no damage to a baby’s mind or spirit, infants diagnosed with SMA Type I require round-the-clock care, and have a life expectancy of between one to two years.
